When you’re about to add an electric motor to your bike (follow our tutorial here), it’s important to consider several aspects. Firstly, you need to examine the geometry and size of your bike frame to determine whether the motor can be fitted. It’s essential that bikes with carbon frames have aluminum bottom brackets, to avoid any risk of damage to the carbon by the motor.

If your bottom bracket diameter is too small or too large, this may limit the possibility of mounting the motor. Please note that we also offer an adapter for Pressfit bottom brackets 41mm in diameter and 86/92mm in length (PF 86 or PF92).

Next, check that your bike has enough space to accommodate the battery. If your bike is small, this can be a challenge, but there are workarounds, such as battery bags or rack-mounted batteries.

Finally, it’s important to examine the quality of your transmission and brakes to see if they’re suitable for the addition of an electric motor. If your transmission isn’t in good condition, it may not be able to handle the extra power of the motor (we talk about this here), and if your brakes aren’t powerful enough, it could cause safety problems.

Taking all these aspects into account may seem tedious, but it can help you achieve a more enjoyable and safer riding experience with your electric bike.

In summary, the following points should be checked:

  • The bottom bracket is not carbon.
  • Examine the geometry and size of your bicycle frame to determine whether the motor can be fitted.
  • Check that your bike has enough space to accommodate the battery.
  • Examine the quality of your transmission and brakes to see if they are suitable for the addition of an electric motor.

As you can see, for the TSDZ2there is only a limited space between the motor axle (which is inserted into your bike’s bottom bracket) and the lower motor housing/support. This gap can only accommodate 8 mm of space. An 8 mm gap is usually sufficient to run cables under the bottom bracket (even if you have to remove the guide or sand it down) on aluminum, steel and titanium frames, but most carbon bikes have too thick a shell/wall around the bottom bracket for a TSDZ2 to be compatible. It is essential that bicycles with carbon frames are fitted with aluminum bottom brackets to avoid any risk of damage to the carbon by the motor.

As you can see, for the TSDZ8there is a larger gap between the motor axle (which is inserted into the bottom bracket of your bike) and the lower motor housing/support. This gap can accommodate 10 mm of space. On aluminum, steel and titanium frames, a 10 mm gap is generally sufficient to pass cables under the bottom bracket, but most carbon bikes have too thick a shell/wall around the bottom bracket for a TSDZ8 to be compatible. It is essential that bicycles with carbon frames are fitted with aluminum bottom brackets to avoid any risk of damage to the carbon by the motor.

In some cases (particularly with bikes with wide tires) the chainstay tubes (the rear part of the frame that runs towards the derailleur hanger) can bend at an acute angle from the bottom bracket, usually to accommodate the very wide tire (fatbike type), and the motor (whatever the model) can then touch the frame at this point. In this case, use the spacers supplied with the kit. But if the chainstay is too flared, this will prevent you from inserting the motor completely into the bottom bracket. On each kit product page, you can download the motor template TSDZ2 or TSDZ8 to check before ordering.

In addition, the frame tubes must allow for battery installation:

  • Available battery length

  • Diameter of down tube for battery mounting

  • The shape of the down tube for battery mounting

For a typical Dutch-style bike (like Decathlon’s ELOPS 520), it’s best to install the battery on the seat tube. In this case, the seat tube must be long enough to accommodate the battery. It is important to check that the battery can be installed comfortably without affecting the rider’s comfort.

By taking these dimensions into account, you’ll be able to install your electric motor kit on your bike in complete safety, and get the most out of your electric bike experience.
