What are the advantages of installing an electric kit on your bike?
Ride your bike to work, without worrying about arriving at the office in a sweat. That’s one of the many advantages of an electrically-assisted bicycle. Its motor gives you a boost when you need to climb a hill, carry loads or even when you don’t have enough strength in your legs. The arrival of the electric bike kit is revolutionizing the world of EABs. It’s the ideal solution to ecological concerns and the need to reduce transport costs.
Electrifying your bike is cheaper than buying a VAE
The price of an electric city bike reaches 3,000 euros, while a complete top-of-the-range electric kit costs around 900 euros.
Add to this the savings you make on your transport costs. Taking all expenses into account (purchase price, maintenance, fuel, etc.), the cost of travelling by car is 26.90 euros per 100 km covered; for cycling, it’s around 1 euro per 100 km.
Basically, the electrification kit is :
- Cheaper to buy;
- Cheaper to use.
Buying an electrification kit is an ecological gesture in many ways
Riding an electrically-assisted bicycle means reducing your CO2 emissions and your carbon footprint. It’s an eco-responsible choice. And if you choose to install a conversion kit instead of buying an original motorized bike, you’re doing more for the planet.
- You give your bike a second life, which reduces pollution and conserves resources;
- With our electric bike kits, you opt for durable, repairable parts, which offer the same ecological benefits as the previous ones.
Cycling is a very practical means of transport in Lille
When you cycle in the Lille European Metropolis (MEL), you benefit from these advantages:
- Avoid getting stuck in rush-hour traffic;
- It’s easier to find a place to park your bike than a car.
It should be noted that the Keep my Bike start-up is installing ultra-secure bike stations in the capital of the Hauts-de-France region. These new facilities are in addition to those already in place.
Leaving the car and cycling in Lille earns you money
Lille was the first city in France to introduce positive tolls. Implemented from September 2023, this ecobonus rewards all those who no longer use their cars to travel on MEL’s major motorway routes during rush hour.
Here is some information about the positive toll:
- Drivers enrolled in the program receive 2 euros per trip avoided, up to a maximum of 80 euros/month;
- To take part, pre-register for the program on the Lille Metropole website;
- To qualify for the bonus, participants must give priority to car-pooling, opt for teleworking, shift their commuting times or turn to soft mobility such as using an electric bike.
- To verify your participation, you need to declare your avoided car journeys on a mobile application.
Which electric conversion kit should I choose for my bike?
An electrification kit is the set of parts needed to upgrade a muscle bike (non-motorized bike). It includes an electric motor, battery, sensors and display.
At Syklo, you have a choice of motors, batteries and screens. That’s why we offer these parts separately, so you can customize your two-wheeler to your liking. As for sensors, ours are integrated into the engine.
To choose your complete kit, we recommend that you read the following information carefully.
The different types of engine kits
There are 3 types of motorization, distinguished by the way they are installed on the bike.
Front wheel motor
Installed on the front wheel, it exerts traction on the bike. It promotes better acceleration on a straight track. This is the simplest model on the market. It’s also the most common type of kit found on entry-level bikes. Its positioning makes it difficult to handle the bike in bends and on difficult terrain. Although easy to install, the front-wheel motor is incompatible with through axles. A thru axle strengthens strength, enhances stability and improves handling.
Rear wheel motor
Installed on the hub, the rear-wheel motor propels the bike, giving it extra power. Its weight enhances the rear wheel’s grip on the ground. Thanks to this, the bike can easily negotiate different terrain configurations. Rear-wheel motors are generally found on Gravel bikes, Fats bikes and electric-assist mountain bikes. This type of kit is also incompatible with through axes.
Pedal motor
As its name suggests, it is installed at the bottom bracket, in the center of the bike. This location balances the bike and gives the rider a better riding experience. The bottom bracket motor kit is ideal for cyclists looking to match electric assistance to the effort they wish to make. This type of electric bike kit is compatible with through-axles and fast-axles.
Engine power
Expressed in watts (W), the power of the motorization determines its ability to make the bike go very fast. In other words, a powerful engine enables the two-wheeler to reach higher speeds.
- If you want to ride on the cycle paths of the rue de Lille or head off to neighboring towns, you’ll need a 250 W motor. This is the maximum power of a VAE authorized to circulate on public roads in France.
- You can choose a more powerful motor (over 400 W) if you want to boost your bike for your hobbies (racing, obstacle clearance, etc.) on private land.
The couple
Expressed in Newton meters (NM), torque indicates the force developed by the motor to move the bike forward. Simply put, a high-torque motor means less effort when carrying heavy loads or negotiating climbs.
- A motor delivering less than 85 Nm of torque is sufficient for everyday urban travel (going to the office, running errands, etc.).
- An electrification kit that develops torque in excess of 85 Nm is ideal for those looking for power and who use the bike for professional purposes, for example.
Battery selection
It’s the battery that supplies the motor with energy. The Wh (watt-hour) indicates the amount of energy available at full charge. A high-capacity battery gives the bike a very long range.
- Batteries with a capacity of less than 300 Wh are intended for everyday use or weekend outings.
- Those with more than 500 Wh of power help you cover long distances without needing to recharge.
The electric-assist bike display
The EAB display provides all the important information you need, such as battery charge status, remaining range and speed. It also lets you control the electric assistance functions from the handlebars.
The display is used to control the bike’s electric assistance level. With it, you can demand 50%, 100%, 150% or even 300% of your sporting performance.
To choose the screen that will make up your electrification kit, check :
- The variety of information it provides;
- The number of levels of assistance you can control from the screen.

Here are our two screens:
- DZ41 Pro screen: displays essential information (time, distance, speed, route, battery charge status, etc.). It offers 4 levels of assistance (Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo).
- Expert 860C display: in addition to displaying essential information, it also shows other parameters such as battery voltage, consumption in Wh/km and, most importantly, pedaling power. It offers a run mode and 9 assistance levels.
Another advantage of our electrification kits
Our conversion kit is designed for easy assembly and disassembly. If you feel like pedaling without activating the electric assistance, you can remove it and you’re back on a muscle bike.
Our tips for electrifying your bike
Have you chosen the right kit? All that’s left now is the assembly. For this operation, we advise you to use the services of a professional bike store or bike repair shop. Another good idea is to get in touch with a local bicycle repair shop.
Here’s the right address for a bike repair shop in Lille:
- Les Jantes du Nord: a participative and supportive bicycle repair workshop located at 5 rue Jules de Vicq – 59800 Lille, telephone number 03.59.50.45.32. In addition to repair assistance, this workshop also offers reconditioning of second-hand bikes for sale.
You can install it yourself if you have the right tools, and it will only take a couple of hours. Please note, however, that if you are not a certified bicycle repair professional, your frame will not be approved.
